Motshekga to announce 2017 matric results

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will announce the 2017 matric results in Auckland Park, Johannesburg on Thursday evening.

The previous year’s overall pass rate stood at 72.5%. That was a 1.8% improvement from 2015’s 70.7%.

In recent years, matric exams have been marred by incidents of paper leaks and group copying. However, the 2017 exams were declared incident free.

Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says, “Well, it’s a big day indeed, it’s a day that everyone has been waiting for, to see and hear what the Minister of Basic Education will have to say.”

“She will be announcing the pass rate for the class of 2017, as well as the performance of provinces. When you look at the numbers and look at the percentages, there are two things emerging there.”

“So my advice would be for people to look at the province, look at the enrolment, look at the number of candidates who sat for the examinations and also look at how they performed. But I think there are interesting things that the Minister will be talking about tonight,” Mhlanga adds.

Twenty learners and their parents from different schools in the country arrived in Johannesburg on Wednesday as guests of the Minister.

They, however, still don’t know how well they did, but they are among the top achievers.

The group will attend a breakfast event with Motshekga before the official announcement of the results in the evening.
