Motorists urged to be cautious amid torrential rains

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Torrential rains are expected to continue across Gauteng this week and police are warning motorists to be extra cautious. 36 accidents had been reported between 6am and midday.

Emergency services are monitoring low-lying areas and informal settlements.

During spring rains and torrential flooding the bands of the Jukskei often burst. It affects adjoining communities. While the recent downpours have not caused much damage, EMS teams remain on high alert.

Setswetla informal settlement is prone to flooding.

Last November, spring rains left a trail of destruction. It also claimed lives.

Residents in the area are still reeling from that tragedy.

Michael Modiba has lived in the area all his life and has lived through several rain related natural disasters.

Precious Ralebala fears there could be a repeat of last November’s devastation. The rain also wreaked havoc on some of the provinces roads.

With no fatalities motorists are again urged to reduce speed and to keep a safe following distance. A pipe also burst from incessant rainfall.

The heavy downpours are expected to subside by Thursday.
