Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Jacob Zuma has announced that the party’s ex deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe, will be in charge of establishing political schools for members. President Zuma made the announcement in his closing address to the party’s Mangaung Conference. This was greeted with a standing ovation by the delegates.

Zuma also spoke of the ANC’s adoption of a ten year renewal programme that includes improving the quality of their members through political education and financial literacy. Motlanthe lost to Zuma in the presidential contest and withdrew from standing for elections for the National Executive Committee.

President Zuma also warned that the ANC will discipline those that take the party to court. Disgruntled groups in the Free State and North West dragged the ANC to court and threatened to interdict the conference. Some ANC leaders have been seen to remain close to expelled youth league president Julius Malema. Zuma says the party will discipline those who sow divisions.

President Zuma also announced that the ANC had undertaken to overcome poverty and unemployment in the next five years. Zuma also commented on the health of Nelson Mandela, saying the entire country hopes Madiba’s condition will continue to improve.
