Motaung laments lack of government support, opportunities

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Nthabiseng Motaung (22) from the Caleb Motshabi informal settlement in Bloemfontein is a sex worker. It’s the only way she can earn some money to look after herself, her children and her siblings.

However, all she really wants to do is to go back to school to get a proper education in order to improve her life.

“My plea to government is to help me get back to school so that I can support my siblings, because we don’t have parents. That would help me to re-instill confidence in my family. Even though I’m still young, I haven’t experienced any positive changes in my life. Government has failed me.”

Motaung says when she does not have any clients, her family goes to bed hungry.

“I live in a shack. There’s no electricity. We only have paraffin. I live with my two children and without their fathers.  The government child support grant is way too little. I’m only a sex worker and I’m not proud of that. We don’t even have a toilet or water where I stay. And when I don’t have any clients, we go to bed hungry.”

Motaung dreams of a better life for people her age. “My dream is to see people my age going to school, working and having their lives changed for the better – not living with their parents.”
