Mossel Bay in the Western Cape has been a hive of activity this weekend as Transnet opened up its usually highly- secured port to the public for the first Garden Route Port Festival.

Transnet says the festival will allow the public to educate themselves and see what actually takes place inside their port.

They also want to promote maritime careers and business opportunities that the industry offers.

Mossel Bay Port Manager, Shadrack Tshikalange, says people should be able to experience what goes on behind the scenes.

“So this is the first time that the port of Mossel Bay is having the festival in collaboration with the district municipality in order to bring all the stakeholders together with the district of the Southern Cape. So the idea behind it is to make sure that we bring everybody, the small business, the community. But one of the biggest aims is for people to have access to the port, people to start understanding what is happening in the port system.”
