Sundowns are on the verge of reaching the CAF Champions League group stages for the seventh time in their history.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has welcomed the club’s new Director of Academy and Scouting Jose Ramon Alexanco.

The Spaniard was brought in last week to oversee the youth set-ups as well as scouting. There were reports earlier this season that Mosimane was ready to quit the club if they brought a European director, which Mosimane denied.

Alexanco is a retired Spanish defender who played for Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao. He was an assistant coach for Barcelona in 2000 and later became the Director of Football at Valencia. Mosimane is hoping to learn from him.

Sundowns are on the verge of reaching the CAF Champions League group stages for the seventh time in their history.

They hammered Cote dÓr from Seychelles 5-0 away from home. They are also in a good position to reach the MTN8 final when they meet SuperSport United in the second leg on Wednesday.

They are currently fifth on the league, and Mosimane believes that PSL is a very tough league.

The Brazilians played to a 1-1 draw against SuperSport United in the first leg encounter few weeks ago.

They go into the match with an advantage of an away goal. Mosimane is happy the cup games will be played midweek.

The 2016 CAF champions took many players to the Seychelles including those that are not registered in the competition.

Mosimane says it is important for other players to experience conditions on the continent.

Sundowns signed former Bafana Bafana striker Tokelo Rantie on a three-year deal last week.

Rantie has not played football for two years, and has been training with the team since the beginning of the season. Mosimane says it is important to give him another chance. – Report by Vincent Sitsula
