Westonaria police on Gauteng’s West Rand say they arrested more than 50 people in a widespread crime prevention operation on Friday.

The charges range from possession of stolen property and assault with intent to do grievious bodily harm to more minor offences and the detention of undocumented foreign nationals.

During the operation, police searched more than 250 vehicles and 420 people.

The police’s Lucky Matome says the suspects will appear in the Westonaria Magistrates Court in the coming week on a variety of offences, while the foreign nationals have been handed over to the Department of Home Affairs.

Matome says the officers were deployed around areas that are regarded as crime hotspots.
