More than 4 000 new coronavirus cases recorded in SA, 183 more deaths on Tuesday

The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa has increased by 4 011, bringing the total number to  821 889. In a statement released on Tuesday, the Department of Health confirmed that 183 more deaths were recorded since the last report.

The Eastern Cape has now overtaken Gauteng and has recorded most provincial deaths at 5 060, with Western Cape moving up rapidly.

The total number of deaths increases to 22 432 on Tuesday after “Eastern Cape 82, Free State 20, Gauteng 11, Kwa-Zulu Natal 13, Northern Cape 7, and Western Cape, 50.”

A cumulative 5 640 042 tests have been completed. The Western Cape has the highest number of active cases 7 983.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic was high on the governing party – the African National Congress’ National Executive Committee’s agenda. President Cyril Ramaphosa in his capacity as ANC president says the meeting has emphasised a need for Africa to build its own capacity in the manufacturing of a vaccine.

First vaccinations in UK

This, as the first Coronavirus vaccinations have taken place in the UK, in what people are hoping is the beginning of the end of the pandemic. The UK was the first place to approve the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine for use, and eight hundred thousand doses will be given in the next few weeks. John Bevir has this report.
