The aviation industry is financially bleeding as a result of COVID-19.

The country’s 29% unemployment rate is set to sky-rocket to as much as 50% this year because of the impact of the coronavirus. This is as businesses across the economic spectrum continue to lay off workers in big numbers as they struggle to survive under lockdown.

South Africa has been under the lockdown for over a month now. Businesses, big and small, are forced to shut down.

The impact on the economy, devastating. President Cyril Ramaphosa says the economy is suffering under the lockdown.

According to the South African Revenue Service, 20 000 jobs were lost last month alone. National Treasury says up to 7 million jobs are on the line because of COVID-19. This could push up the official unemployment rate to 40 or even 50%.
