A 27-year-old man arrested at OR Tambo International Airport for attempting to smuggle nearly R7 million worth of currency to Mauritius will appear in court on Monday.
The police’s Vishnu Naidoo says the man was found with nearly $200 000 and a further R4.5 million in his possession.
Naaido says the man’s bag was intercepted and after finding that the bag did indeed contain money, it was seized and the man was arrested.
He is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges in terms of the customs and excise act.
“So we’ve still got to try and establish where he got the money, what the money was intended for. There is a whole lot of questions that still need answering. We’re still in our very early stages of the investigation and as the investigation progresses we will be able to establish a lot more information,” says Naaido.
