Residents of the eNgonyameni area in Ingwavuma in far northern KwaZulu-Natal have been recounting harrowing stories of how a severe thunderstorm left a trail of destruction.
Lightning killed four members of the Mngomezulu family.
Relative and neighbour Zodwa Simelane rushed to the scene after the house caught fire.
Simelane who managed to save one child says she will never forget this painful experience.
“When I entered their homestead, one of the little ones called me saying: ‘please rescue me, please rescue me and take Asi, the three year-old who was burning on the bed. He was burnt beyond recognition and there was nothing I could have done to save him as the blaze was too big. Their mother and another baby had already died by then. I only managed to save one child,” explains Simelane.
