French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday bestowed the award of Officer in the French Legion of Honour on Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa.

Minister d’Etat, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, Nicolas Hulot, awarded the medal in Pretoria on behalf of the French President.

The National Order was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and is the highest decoration in France.

Hulot says Molewa was awarded the honour for her commitment to South Africa, the struggle for freedom and democracy, women’s rights and the fight against climate change.

Hulot and Molewa worked together during COP 17 in Durban which laid the foundation for the Paris agreement. Hulot called Molewa a “great Lady”
