African National Congress (ANC)’s first Deputy Secretary-General, Nomvula Mokonyane has welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s four-point plan to tackle the high rate of Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in the country.

She made the remarks whilst on the campaign trail in Extension 13, Kagiso, on Gauteng’s West Rand.

On Tuesday, President Ramaphosa announced four measures including a review of unresolved GBVF cases.

He also directed that municipalities do a women safety audit in their areas including identifying dangerous buildings and dark streets.

Mokonyane says a collective effort is needed.

“For us to deal with issues of crime, we don’t only need police. we need not to buy stolen goods. We need not to harbor criminals. We need not to be the ones who do not speak out as and when crime is committed. The President is also correct to emphasize the need of an integrated, multidisciplinary approach, so that it is not just about law enforcement. It’s also about the justice, the justice system. It’s about social rehabilitation.”
