Mokonyane says the SABC needs to reposition itself and convince everybody that it is capable of doing things.

Communications Minister Nomvula Mokonyane has highlighted the importance of the SABC attaining long-term financial viability.

She says in order for the SABC to overcome its financial crisis, innovative ideas should be considered.

Mokonyane says the public must pay for their TV licences and “making sure that we give SABC the space to find new partners that can change the revenue streams of the SABC and being less dependent on eternal services providers but building the capacity.”

She says the SABC needs to reposition itself and convince everybody that it is capable of doing things.

Mokonyane says her department is determined to ensure the success of the public broadcaster’s turnaround strategy.

“The future of this country must be everybody’s business, you must start in your own little space, government creates an enabling environment. Our institutions must be geared toward that the South African broadcasting corporation must be helped to become a broadcaster of integrity bringing it even beyond its former glory and ensure that you have capable men and women in the Board,” says Mokonyane.

Earlier this year, she said the SABC was owed a staggering R25-billion in unpaid licence fees. She said this had steadily accumulated over three years and was sinking the public broadcaster into deep financial trouble.
