‘Mokgoro has the experience to lead’

Political commentators say the African National Congress Premier candidate for North West, Professor Job Mokgoro, has the experience to lead the troubled province.

Mokgoro is expected to be sworn in on Friday as a member of the provincial legislature and then premier, with former premier Supra Mahumapelo resigning his seat in the legislature.

Born in the Northern Cape, 70-year-old Mokgoro holds a master of public administration degree from the University of Toledo in the US.

His former colleagues at the North West University have praised Mokgoro’s track record.  One of them is Professor Theo Venter.

“He became the first Director General. He did a very good job at the beginning of the North West. Remember what they had amalgamation, coordinate and integrate four to five different administrations into one provincial administration – include into the implementation of the new constitutions about what province can do. What National can do those kind of things together with Popo Molefe, they actually founded the province. I expedience him as a good administrator and very strict.”

The EFF, the main opposition in North West, says Mokgoro is a crony of Mahumapelo and will just be used to continue the looting in the province.

The DA says the ANC can send the devil to lead the province as long as there is service delivery.

He served in several boards of State owned enterprises in the province and advised former Premier Mahumapelo in many portfolios of governance.

Mokgoro was married to former Constitutional Court Justice Yvonne Mokgoro and will serve as premier until next year’s general elections.
