Mohlakeng residents attack police station

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Residents of Mohlakeng in Westonaria on Gauteng’s West Rand have attacked a police station – breaking windows and pulling down the fence.

Police say it is currently unclear what the residents are protesting about, but they have also warned motorists to stay away from the R28 between Randfontein and Westonaria because of protest action also there.

Police spokesperson Appel Ernst says they have also been stationed at different municipal buildings to avoid further vandalism.

She says allegations that other buildings such as the library have been set alight, are not yet confirmed.

“Currently we have approximately a 1 000 to 1 500 protesters setting buildings alight as well as vehicles, the SAPS are in the area and some vehicles have already been damaged as well during this protest. They’ve attacked Mohlakeng police station, it was not set alight, but the whole place is in tatters.”
