Modise joins compromised cabinet: EFF

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise may have the necessary qualities to be Defence Minister but she is joining what the party terms a “compromised cabinet”.

EFF Member of Parliament Veronica Mente says the party is not excited about President Ramaphosa’s cabinet reshuffle.

She says the changes show that there are no consequences for wrongdoing.

“Mama Thandi Modise is a legend on her own, and she may bring in much more needed experience, much more stability. What can she do in a cabinet that is of that stature which is compromised, which has ever done anything. Look at the welfare of the country, look at the economic policies, look at the social policies of this country. Even those that are good on paper- they have done absolutely nothing about it. We see money disappearing, we see money beings stolen,” says Mente.

President Cyril Ramaphosa reshuffles National Cabinet

Other opposition parties generally feel that President Cyril Ramaphosa should have done more in his cabinet reshuffle. United Democratic Alliance (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa has criticised the appointment of Enoch Godongwana as Finance Minister.

He also says the three ministers from the security cluster – Bheki Cele, Ayanda Dlodlo and Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula should have been fired. Dlodlo has been moved from State Security to Public Service and Administration. She takes over from Senzo Mchunu has moved to Water and Sanitation.

Holomisa says he’s concerned about the change in the Finance portfolio.

“The ANC is running thin on leadership of quality people you can appoint as Ministers. I never thought that Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni would be replaced by a head of economic desk of the ANC which has failed dismally in that desk. Let alone his past shenanigans which cause him a cabinet post. In so far as the security cluster is concerned I think President Cyril Ramaphosa should have sent those three back home,” says Holomisa.
