The Mmabana Arts Centre in Mahikeng in the North West is on the brink of collapse. The building was destroyed during the so-called “Supra Must Fall protests” in 2018.
Government has been unable to fix it since then.
In the video below Mmabana Arts Centre set alight during violent anti-Supra Mahumapelo protests in Mahikeng.
Mmabana has produced many exceptional performers…..the likes of Presley Chweneyagae, who is the star of the Grammy award-winning movie Tsotsi, Dancer Tebogo Kgobokoe and Motswako artist Tuks Senganga.
Acting CEO of Mmabana Arts Culture & Sports Foundation, Itumeleng Mogorosi, says the community must take the blame for the situation in Mmabana.
“If the institution was only dealing with poor management, maladministration, government-related challenges it would be understandable because management would be solely responsible. Now we are dealing with the effects of damages to the infrastructure as a result of unprecedented community unrest, that has taken us steps backward. We’re unable to deliver our programs the way we should be.”
Motswako artist, Tuks Senganga, says the state of Mmabana is concerning.
“Mmabana meant a lot to us as artists and creatives of the North West. It built us. it built our confidence, to express ourselves with our language. It is quite sad if now we hear that things are not going well.”
