Members of Parliament’s Justice committee have expressed outrage at the Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, for not attending Wednesday’s meeting.

Among others, the committee was scheduled to discuss a request to institute an inquiry into the Public Protector’s fitness to hold office.

The committee has however again deferred that decision.

Chairperson, Mathole Motshekga says they received a letter late on Tuesday afternoon that Mkhwebane would not be able to attend the meeting, and that no delegation would appear either.

DA Shadow Minister of Justice, Glynnis Breytenbach says it shows a contempt of the committee.

“I must from the outset express outrage at the fact that there is no attempt to attend the meeting.”

Motshekga says Mkhwebane must appear before the committee next week.

“We want a full explanation on why she is not here, and we expect next week when she appears before us, she must then table the report we expect of her before the meeting.”
