Mixed reactions to ‘no vote’ campaign

Reading Time: 2 minutes

African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Ronnie Kasrils’ ‘no vote’ campaign has generated mixed reactions among political leaders in Parliament.

Kasrils and former deputy health minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge have reportedly asked South Africans to take a stand against fraud and corruption by spoiling their votes.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) says it is irresponsible to encourage voters to spoil their ballot papers while the United Democratic Movement (UDM) says the campaign should be welcomed.

Kasrils and several other former struggle icons say it is time that a message is sent to the ruling party that the corruption it is presiding over is unacceptable.

The group will on Tuesday launch the Sidikiwe!Vukani! No Vote campaign.

It is calling on those who do not want to vote for the ANC, to rather vote for other parties or spoil their ballot papers.

ACDP leader Kenneth Meshoe says: “When you call on voters to spoil ballot papers you are sending a negative message to them, you are telling them you can be irresponsible because to spoil is to be irresponsible.”

“But secondly those who are spoiling ballot papers would in essence be saying I don’t have confidence in any of these other opposition parties on the list.”
