Miss Soweto prioritises culture of reading

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A book drive and hand over is one of the numerous efforts of charity work expected from the reigning Miss Soweto 2017, Busisiwe Mmotla.

The drive aims to improve the reading habits of children in townships, as well as create and motivate a reading culture in all local communities.

The effort forms part of giving back to the less fortunate in the spirit of former president, Nelson Mandela.

Mmotla says the formation of the book drive was inspired by the love she has for books, “I’m very passionate about education, and I feel that as South Africans we have a lot to do to improve on our education.”

The beauty queen says reading improves the communication skills and vocabulary. “We need to start the reading culture at an early age, read to them so that they can grow up knowing the importance of reading.”
