The 70th Miss Universe event was held in Eilat, Israel.

Mswane received widespread criticism in South Africa to boycott the event being held in Israel.

The South African government withdrew its support for Mswane in order to stand by the Palestinian people.

In the statement,  Minister Nathi Mthethwa said that whilst it appreciate the likely impact on the individual interest of the current Miss South Africa, reasons for withdrawal, far outweigh individual interest.
