Mining houses, organised labour need to work together: Expert

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mining has been the backbone of South Africa’s economy. Democracy20 Elections Show has looked at the mining industry in the country in the past two decades.

CEO at Esop Shop, Gavin Hartford says mining houses and organised labour need to come together and create a safe working environment for mineworkers.

He says what he has been seeing in the industry is the inability of both parties to work together to find solutions to some of the challenges facing the mining sector.

Hartford says: “I think both employers and unions could have been much more proactive in looking at what where the social and economic conditions under which employees were living in over the last 20 years. I am not saying things were not done, things were done, but I don’t believe enough was done in respect of changing the quality of working life of ordinary mine workers on the ground.”-Edited by Sthembiso Sithole.
