Mine bosses must be held accountable for miners’ deaths: NUM

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The National Union of Mineworkers wants mine bosses to be held personally responsible for the deaths of mine workers at their mines. This was in reaction to the death of yet another mineworker at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Khomanani mine in Driefontein west of Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The miner entered a scraper path and was caught by the scraper. A total of 21 mine workers have died at Sibanye-Stillwater’s mine this year alone. The NUM’s Livhuwani Mammburu says negligent bosses must be sent to jail.

“Mining bosses who are found to be negligent to fatalities that are happening in the mining industry must be arrested, prosecuted and sent to jail. We’re still going to see a situation where mining bosses, when there are fatalities they are not held responsible and that is why you see these fatalities increasing, because they don’t really care about the lives of mine-workers.”
