Metrorail says services on the Cape Flats line, which were suspended on Wednesday due to a train that caught alight near Ottery, have now been restored. One person died in the incident and others sustained burn wounds.

Fire services say they suspect arson was the cause of the fire.

Metrorail Spokesperson, Riana Scott says police are investigating the cause of the fire.

“Two commuters were injured. One was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The other did not require treatment. Three of our staff were treated for smoke inhalation and a body was subsequently discovered in one of the damaged carriages. Our regional manager and our employees and staff and management wish the injured a speedy recovery and thank the teams for their efforts today.”
