Metrorail says it has suspended its train services in Ga-Rankuwa, North West of Pretoria, to avoid risking the lives of their drivers and commuters in Ga-Rankuwa.

On Tuesday morning protestors burnt tyres and placed objects on the railway tracks.

Metrorail says as many as 20 000 commuters had to seek alternative transport.

“Fortunately the protection services officials managed to come quickly and law enforcement agencies tried to get all the tyres that were burnt on the tracks removed and there are no damages that we have suffered up until now,” says Gauteng Metrorail Spokesperson Lilian Mofokeng.
