The Life Esidimeni Inquest has heard on how mentally ill patients had to be first prepared before they could be moved to a new environment.

Rochelle Gordon, the nurse that was tasked with overseeing patients, who were moved from Life Esidimeni to NGOs told the inquest.

144 mental ill patients lost their lives following the move in 2016. On Thursday, Gordon told the inquest that she did what she had to do to avoid being charged with insubordination.

The inquest seeks to probe on whether there are individuals that could be criminally charged for the deaths. Gordons elaborates.

“Mental health care users become attached to the environment quickly, and now they have to adapt to a new environment. So it is very important to re-assure them that everything will be okay. But the fact that they did not know where they were going created in them fears.”
