According to research done by the Harvard Medical School, sitting indoors for long periods could lead to mental illness.

Thursday marks Mental Health Awareness Day, whilst October is also Mental Health Awareness Month. The aim of the awareness is to curb the rising depression rates in the country.

Researchers also say being stuck in traffic, high social media use, a lack of movement and even slouching are some of the contributing factors to mental illness.

Pharmacist Abdurahman Kenny says, “The causes of mental illness are always multi-factorial. Some of these factors are directly related o the type of lifestyle we are living and these factors are quite surprising such as not getting enough sunlight, lack of exercise, also being stuck in traffic for extended periods of time as well excessive social media use,” says Kenny.
