A group of six men and six women are going the extra mile as they walk from Johannesburg to Mahikeng.

They are walking against women abuse and they plan to reach Mahikeng on Women’s Day.

SABC News caught up with the group in Carletonville.

Tebogo Mogotsi, a 50-year-old mother of two, is one of the participants. She herself has endured years of abuse.

“When I complete this journey on the 9th, I want to make people to know that a woman can stand up for herself and we are not just items that can be tossed around as men please,” says Mogotsi.

Mile by mile the determined walkers aim to spread the message of gender harmony.

“There is other ways to resolve conflict besides violence. Hitting a woman is not a solution,” says one of the walkers.

“It’s important that young people participate in this walk because violence is something that starts when someone is young,” adds another walker.

This walk has a clear purpose, its message is that it takes only one man to do damage but it requires many to bring about change.
