Men urged to join #100MenMarch

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Government calls on all men to join the #100MenMarch on Tuesday in Pretoria and boldly declare that violence against women and children will not be tolerated.

Acting Director General of Government Communications and Information Services, Pumla Williams, says the #100MenMarch will be a motivating force to ensure that men break the chain of abuse.

The march will start at 10:00 at Church Square in the city and the men will march to the Union Buildings. Williams says the march will also commemorate the centenary birthday of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.

“We want to remind everybody that these stalwarts have spent their lives fighting for this freedom, fighting for this Constitution, fighting for human rights; and I think it is in our hands to make sure we do not fail them because at a rate of 117% it just tells you we are failing the stalwarts.”

The march aims to draw at least 100 men from each various sectors of society, such as government, business, labour, faith-based organisations, non-profit and media organisations. The men who participate will also be asked to take a pledge.

Williams says the march will also acknowledge that not all men are perpetrators of gender based violence. She added that the tide will only turn when young boys are taught to respect all sexes.

“Of concern is the age at which we find the perpetrators. They are coming young in school, boys abusing girls. They are coming younger and younger and the question is what are we doing as a nation?

She said the march will not be a once off event and will be held annually.
