Men accused of disrupting elections in Giyani granted bail

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Two men accused of disrupting elections at Guwela village, outside Giyani, were granted bail of R5000 each on Thursday.

They are accused of contravening the Electoral Act.

The Giyani Magistrate’s Court was packed to the rafters with the majority of people in support of the accused. Victor Mabunda and Advice Maluleke were arrested early on Tuesday morning.

Outside court, fellow community members demanded their release. The state did not oppose bail.

Lawyer Silence Mthombeni says his clients have a strong case and accused number two was not even anywhere near the scene of the incident.

Their arrest caused uproar. Streets were barricaded and polls boycotted.

The situation is now calm.
