Meeting over alleged voting irregularity still on at ANC conference

Reading Time: 2 minutes

An urgent meeting of the African National Congress’ steering committee is still under way to discuss an alleged irregularity in the election of a new party secretary general on Tuesday.  North West ANC Chairperson Supra Mahumapelo has warned backers of Senzo Mchunu, who narrowly lost the vote, not to push for the inclusion of 68 alleged missing votes.

Ace Magashule won the Secretary General post by only 24 votes.  Electoral officials allegedly told 68 delegates that they did not appear on the voters’ roll.

Mahumapelo says if any call for a complete rerun is entertained, it will plunge the entire ANC elective conference into disarray.

“As a province we met with our delegates that they must accept and live with the results but we are surprised that some people are raising complaints about the outcome, but they must know the risk we are getting the ANC into because the risks are two, one is that you can’t just call for the re-counting of one position because you don’t know who voted because this is a secret ballot, it means it will have to be for the entire officials. The other risk they are pushing the organisation into is to say there must be a re-run of the entire officials and I don’t know if they want to do that.” Click below for more on the story:
