KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Community Safety, Liaison and Transport, Mxolisi Kaunda, has called for calm at Chatsworth south of Durban after the killing of nine-year-old Sadia Sukhraj during a failed car hijacking.

Kaunda says he will lead the police management to engage the community in an attempt to address crime in the area.

“We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the family of the 9-year old, who was shot yesterday and as government we are calling for calm in the community. We have observed the protests that we need to handle with care. Government has heard the plight of the community that include house robberies, carjackings.”

“Myself together with the police management we will visit the area to engage the community,” adds Kaunda.

Shukhraj was fatally shot when her father’s car was hijacked in the area on Monday morning.

On Monday night, police used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse angry community members at the local police station demanding protection from criminals.
