MEC threatens to close Soweto ranks

Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi has warned rival Soweto taxi associations WATA and NANDUWE that he will close down their ranks and routes again if they continue with violent attacks.

This follows Thursday’s shooting incident in Dube, Soweto believed to be between the taxi associations.

No one was wounded but police say one person was arrested after being found in possession of an illegal firearm.

Vadi was earlier this year forced to close the ranks and related routes operated by the two taxi associations in the wake of an ongoing feud over routes.

Gauteng Transport spokesperson is Melita Madiba says: “Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport has strongly condemned the actions by both associations and has stressed that should the actions by both associations continue the department will have no option but to close down those ranks following proper legal proceedures.”
