Eastern Cape Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana has called an urgent meeting with taxi bosses amid heightened tensions in the industry.
She has summoned South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) bosses to her office following reports of violence that has spread throughout the province.
Department spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie says they want the issues to be resolved immediately.
“There has been a number of attacks including the gun pointing of one of the taxi bosses in Mdantsane a couple of days ago and the MEC has felt that the tensions are high enough. There is a need then to meet with the industry players just to try to get to the bottom of the challenges and seek a way forward.”
