Measures in place to ensure smooth operations at borders: Border Management Authority

Border Management Authority says measures have been put in place to ensure smooth operations at all borders to neighbouring countries.

It says more holidaymakers would head in different directions starting from Thursday.

The authority has also increased operating hours for the duration of the festive season.

Border Management Authority Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr Mike Masiapato says they will clamp down on illegal activities.

Masiapato says, “The main thing that we require when people come through into the country as most with other restrictions will require negative COVI-19 certificate. However, if somebody comes through the port without that particular certificate, we do have our officers on the ground who are doing the PCR COVID-19 test to be able to determine the status of the individual.”

Illegal border jumpers

Meanwhile, illegal border jumping between South Africa and Zimbabwe is rife.

This comes as thousands of people move between the two countries in search of jobs ahead of the festive season.

Border jumpers told SABC News that strict COVID-19 protocol at the Beitbridge border post has led them to border jumping.
