A family from Lombardy West in Johannesburg is appealing to the public for assistance in repatriating the remains of their 24-year-old daughter, a civil engineering student, from China.

Kgothatso Mdunana died under mysterious circumstances at the end of April. Her family says they are struggling to raise an amount of about R300 000 which is required by the Chinese government to repatriate the remains.

Mdunana was a final-year student at Shandong-Jianzhu University. Her mother, Nomsa Mdunana, says the South African embassy is unable to finance the repatriation.

“We told them that we want Kgothatso’s body because the last time she was home was in 2018, so we really want to see her. So when we see the quotation it was 20 470 dollars. We are reaching out to South Africans to assist because the embassy just told us that the South African embassy doesn’t finance, so we really need assistance in repatriating her home.”
