The Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) was founded on March 8, 2009 by former members of Mozambican National Resistance Movement (Renamo) who disagreed with the expulsion of the Beira mayor Daviz Simango from the party.
The party’s first meeting took place in Beira at the Catholic University of Mozambique.
The party was formally registered with the electoral body on 15 May 2009.
During the November 2009 elections, MDM won at least 24 provincial seats across the country.
MDM is led by Daviz Mbepo Simango who is also the mayor of Beira, the second largest city in Mozambique.
