Richard Mdluli was suspended in 2011 following his arrest on charges related to the murder of Oupa Ramogibe.

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says suspended Crime Intelligence head Richard Mdluli has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

Mdluli was suspended in 2011 following his arrest on charges related to the murder of Oupa Ramogibe.

He was earning a full salary with benefits, costing the taxpayer more than R8 million since his suspension.

Addressing the media in Pretoria, Mbalula outlined the process to appoint a new head of the Hawks.

“I wish to announce that Richard Mdluli, who held the position of divisional commissioner although under a long suspension with mutual agreement, will be relieved of his duties with immediate effect. This enables us to move to the next chapter and instill stability and vision at crime intelligence.

“I have instructed General Khehla Sithole to henceforth set out to appoint a fit and proper man or woman into the position without further delay. Again, I am saying we have no time to waste time,” says Mbalula.
