Mbeki laments under-representation of women in senior positions

Former President Thabo Mbeki says measures should be taken to rectify under-representation of women in senior positions and over-representation in lower positions.

Mbeki addressed a public lecture on Gender Main streaming in the workplace at the University of Venda in Limpopo. He says the process of rectifying must start at the institutions of higher learning.

According to the 2013 Grant Thornton International Business Report, in South Africa, only 28% of senior management positions are filled by women.

Mbeki says female staff under-representation in the higher academic ranks and over-representation in the lower academic ranks must be addressed.

This comes a day after President Jacob Zuma released the first Status of Women in the South African Economy report.

The report shows that only a small number of women have been able to penetrate the country’s macro economy. Many women only participate in the country’s micro economy.

Zuma has called for this to change, saying the country needs to empower its women.
