Mbeki hails Ramaphosa’s election as President

Former President Thabo Mbeki says the election of Cyril Ramaphosa as the country’s President has inspired a lot of hope among South Africans.

After weeks of discussions to convince Jacob Zuma to step down as head of state, Ramaphosa has been sworn in as his successor.

The National Assembly elected Ramaphosa unopposed this afternoon, a day after Zuma’s resignation. Ramaphosa replaced Zuma as ANC leader in December last year.

In an interview with the SABC, Mbeki explained what he wanted to see in the country following the political changes.

“A government that really honestly systematically addresses the concerns of the people. I would like to imagine that President Ramaphosa would want to discharge that kind of responsibility to the people and we are all prepared to help and support him in that regard.”
