Mbeki expresses optimism in Sudanese peace process

African Union mediator in the Sudanese conflict Thabo Mbeki has expressed optimism about the peace process in the troubled country.

This comes after warring parties committed to the cessation of hostilities until June.

The move is expected to top the agenda at an African Union summit which gets underway in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa on Sunday.

Mbeki says plans are in place to finalise the drafting of a new constitution.

“We will not shoot at each other for so many months. That is why I am saying it wouldn’t be difficult to reach a formal agreement and on this particular political side the armed groups have been demanding the drafting of a new constitution. Now the government and ruling party have agreed, so it’s something they share. Let us meet and draft a new constitution. Now there are possibilities where they can meet and draft this constitution, so they can then design Sudan in terms of its governance system by agreement.”
