Former President Thabo Mbeki says that the IEC has dealt well with isolated incidents of IEC officials moving ballot boxes wrongfully. A number of IEC ballot boxes have been found so far to have been moved and the IEC acted against one official in Benoni. The official allowed a party agent to help with moving the ballot boxes for special votes.

Mbeki says credit also needs to be given to the police for ensuring that nothing goes wrong with the elections.

“I think we also need to pay tribute to the police service because I think, in the police that I’ve heard of, the police service has acted very quickly and very correctly to ensure that nothing goes wrong with regard to the elections. I think both the IEC and the police service have behaved really well.”

Mbeki says that he will not discuss any parties on election day as it may be seen as campaigning.

“I’m not going to be discussing any of the parties today because it’s to campaign for or against; it’s not allowed and I think that we need to observe the law as far as these elections are concerned.”
