The City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Corporate and Shared Services, Leah Knott says that they have been complaining about the conversion process that has been taking place in the Municipality for about a year.

The contracts of employees in so-called political offices were converted to permanent positions through questionable means.

The city says that more than 100 employees have been notified of irregularities in the process.

In the video below, City of Johannesburg clarifies future of over 100 employees:

Knott, says that when the process was undertaken, they were not consulted as a political party.

“We found out through our staff that they’d been contacted in our caucus office to come and sign conversion letters. It got to a point where eventually they were threatened with termination if they didn’t sign the conversion letter,” says Knott.

“Both in March 2021 and October 2021, and what’s interesting is that in October, that conversion happened in contradiction to a Salga (South African Local Government Association (SALGA) , directive that came through that said the intention of political offices is actually to fix it to the administrative term, and have a 30 day exit clause,” says Knott.
