Argentine’s Mayer beats Kovalik of Slovakia in German Open

Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer has booked his place in the final of the German Open tennis tournament in Hamburg.

Mayer defeated Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia by two sets to one.

It was the Slovakian qualifier Kovalik who made the better start in the opening set.

Both players were not able to get the better of their opponent’s serve but it went to a tie-breaker which he dominated to the early advantage.

Mayer the defending champion, and a two time winner here, replied immediately earning a decisive break of the Kovalik serve in his first service game.

And the Argentine made no mistake, taking the second to level proceedings.

The final set follwed a similar pattern as the first, and also had to be decided by a tie-breaker.

The Slovakian again dominated but it was Mayer who eventually triumphed, saving a match point on his way to a 6-7, 6-4 and 7-6 victory.
