The 2014 presidential and provincial elections will be held on the 7th of May. This will be the country’s fifth general election. President Jacob Zuma has announced the date in a statement. The president says the term of the current government will come to an end on April 22.

President Jacob Zuma has urged South Africans to go out in their numbers to register this weekend which marks the last special registration weekend. He has called for peace and tolerance towards and during the elections.

Zuma’s announcement comments come as the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has appealed to all eligible voters to make use of the final registration drive this weekend to register or verify their registration for this year’s national and provincial elections.

Since the last registration weekend held in November 2013, the Electoral Commission says it’s focused on ensuring that all South Africans who are eligible to vote are able to register.
