Banyana Banyana were drawn in their pool with debutants Comoros Island, Malawi and Madagascar at the 31 July-11 August event.

South Africa national senior women’s team Banyana Banyana veteran Noko Matlou says the team will be expected to perform well at the upcoming COSAFA Women’s Cup in Port Elizabeth (PE).

Banyana were drawn in their pool with debutants Comoros Island, Malawi and Madagascar at the 31 July-11 August event.

The regional body is also introducing the U20 Women’s Championship starting on 1-11 August also in PE.

Matlou says the defending champions will have to prove why they made a debut at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the region.

The defender says she has been inspired by the United States team who were crowned FIFA Women’s World Cup champions for the fourth time in France over the weekend.

Banyana came home early from the World Cup after failing to get out of the group stage without winning a single match.

Matlou adds to voices that suggest lack of a professional league is one of the reasons African teams did not do well on the world stage. – Report by Lethabo Kganyago
