Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Eastern Cape Chairperson of Boxing South Africa, Phakamile Jacobs, has described the death of renowned sports broadcaster Dumile Mateza as a great loss to the sporting fraternity.

Mateza died on Tuesday at the age of 62 after a long battle with cancer.

He was a sports commentator at the SABC.

Jacobs says Mateza was an asset to sport in the country.

“Dumile was an entertainer. He was outspoken so we lost a man and Dumile was a real model to many of our current TV and radio presenters. They copy what Dumile was doing more especially in cricket if you listen to the guys who are broadcasting in cricket and rugby they copy what Dumile was doing.”

Moment of silence

Meanwhile, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) has sent its condolences to Mateza’s family and the entire sporting fraternity.

The Premier Soccer League will observe a moment of silence for the late sports commentator and the late former Free State MEC and Parliamentary Sports Committee Portfolio Chairperson Butana Komphela.

The moment of silence will be observed at this week’s Nedbank Cup and DSTV Diski Challenge fixtures.
