Sunday marks the close of the 16 Days of Activism for no violence Against Women and Children campaign, and also commemorates International Human Rights Day.

To conclude the campaign, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Michael Masutha will host an inter-departmental Imbizo at Gouda in the Cape Winelands District.

Correctional Services spokesperson, Simphiwe Xako says the area where the dialogue is being held, as well as surrounding towns, are plagued by social ills and an unemployment rate of 66%.

“Our concern as the Department of Justice and Correctional Services is the rate of serious crimes, especially against women and children. The police at a preparatory meeting identified two cases where in September, a 28 year-old woman who can’t be named at this stage, was raped and brutally murdered, and also another suspect was arrested in a different case for having raped a 17 year-old woman and he is going to appear on Monday,” says Xako.
