Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa says the late music icon, Dorothy Masuka fought against the apartheid regime in South Africa through her music.
Masuka was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and her family moved to South Africa when she was 12.
Her passing has been described as a great loss to the country and the music industry.
Mthethwa was speaking at Masuka’s funeral service at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus.
“Under apartheid black people were notoriously forced to carry a range of documents on their person. Masuka’s song from 1957 “zono zam” was recorded during the anti-pass campaign. It was the radical spirit.”
“Some would have confused her soft demeanor with cowardice. That was the lady of resolve. Still resolve to fight injustice to whatever happened to her.”
